airport welcome

4 hr boat ride to village



island pit stop where we ate turtle meat and sago palm tree boiled into a starchy jelly.




1st nite welcome in bau village and intro to kids.



divying up supplies we brought


the way to school. the kids just swim.

at welcome ceremony:






they presented us with so many things. the head-decorations and necklaces are made from shells, seeds and flowers.






in bau village...

no lighters, only boy scout fires.


their feet are unreal.


he's swinging a bull roarer, a disc on a string attached to a stick. it's the male half of traditional implements used to summon women with food to feed tribal committees.

eiya village. 30 minute boat ride away but different language, different facial features and many different customs.

made from the seeds of some fruit i've never seen before. tastes like runny tomato sauce but you have to spit out all the seeds which is a pain...and it leaves your mouth looking like this...

drama performance


ensheila and her mom gave me this clay bowl. mom said daughter saw me looking at one and asked if they could give me one of theirs. tear-jerk.
